  • What is the lifespan of a video tape?

10-25 years. That means if you have tapes from the 90’s – they’re likely already deteriorating. Over time, the magnetic particles lose charge in a phenomenon called remanence decay. This causes discoloration to the footage, blacked-out scenes, and eventually complete loss of picture.

Photos & Negatives:
  • How can I estimate how many photos I have?

Like most, you probably have boxes and boxes of photos that can easily overwhelm anyone. Some tips include:

    100 Photos = 1-inch stack
Photo Packs = 12-36 photos depending on size and duplicates
Photo Albums = typically 300+ photos

    20 Slides = 1-inch stack
Slide Carousels = 80-140 slides depending on size

We recommend sorting and being quick and decisive when choosing. Eliminate duplicate or similar shots of the same event. Toss prints with poor lighting, blurry focus, or insignificant subject matter. This way you can save money and curate a collection.

  • How should I pack my photos?

To ensure a well-organized project upon return, it's important to start off with good organization. By separating your photos into labeled bags based on the year or event, you can ensure that your files are arranged in the desired order. Once you receive your flash drive, you'll find individual folders that mirror the bags, making it easy to locate and access your photos.

  • What resolution do I need?

For photos, the resolution needed depends on the desired size and quality. Generally, a resolution of 300 DPI is suitable for standard prints and online sharing. Enlargement prints may require higher resolutions, such as 600-1200 DPI.

For slides & negatives, it's important to scan them at an even higher resolution to preserve detail. We scan at 2400-3200 DPI ensuring that you have a digital copy to accurately reproduce the image.

We offer a standard or archival transfer that lets you decide what's necessary

  • Can I download photos to my phone?
